Lord Digby Jones Radio 4 interview is 'yodel bombed' by Wanda Jackson in glitch

It was enough to make listeners think they were still dreaming: a live segue from a worthy discussion to a yodelling woman. But Sunday’s on-air glitches on Radio 4’s Broadcasting House were very real.
Shortly after the morning programme began, Lord Digby Jones, the former head of the CBI, began to review a Sunday Telegraph article on the World Trade Organisation’s new director general, Roberto Azevedo.
Suddenly Lord Jones’ thoughts were interrupted by sounds from more than half a century before as yodelling broke out on the airwaves.  For around 10 seconds there was nothing but the sound of the gospel song Jesus Put a Yodel in my Soul made famous by the US country singer Wanda Jackson. “My life was empty, without a goal, then I let Jesus into my soul,” she sings.
Then presenter Paddy O’Connell came back on the air after the brief interlude to apologise for the “glitch”.
The corporation explained the mishap occurred when the battery in the radio car Lord Jones was speaking from in Warwickshire began to run out and the engine had to be restarted.
It was Mr O’Connell not Lord Jones – whose interests include rugby, cricket and football but not yodelling – who then took over. He said: “Apologies if you heard us leave the radio, there has been some kind of glitch and you have heard an orchestra instead of the sweet sounds of our guests.” Confused listeners immediately took to Twitter to speculate the programme had been “hacked” or “yodel-bombed”.
“Was there some random yodelling during Broadcasting House paper review … or did I dream it?” tweeted one user. As the review continued another loud bang interrupted the show. This time a slightly flustered O’Connell asked: “What is going on this morning?” The BBC said the yodel interruption was due to a “technical error”.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at a church in the Mississippi Delta on Saturday for the funeral of BB King, a four-hour celebration of an extraordinary life, studded with mournful blues and rousing gospel music.
It included a proclamation by the governor and former governors of Mississippi naming the guitarist secretary of state for the blues.
King was 89 when he died in Las Vegas on May 14. At his own request, His body was returned to Indianola in his native Mississippi for a final homecoming.
And Mississippi responded in style.
More than 4000 fans filed past his open casket on Friday. Some began queuing at 6am for a chance to see their idol one last time. His coffin rested between a pair of his beloved guitars – always named Lucille – placed on a bed of roses.

Family members arrive for funeral services for blues legend B.B. King at Bell Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Indianola, Mississippi
About 500 people filled Bell Grove Missionary Baptist Church to remember the man christened Riley King, who rose from picker in the state's flat cotton fields to become king of the blues.
In his eulogy, the Rev Herron Wilson, described how one man had put an insignificant delta town on the world stage.
"Hands that once picked cotton would someday pick guitar strings on a national and international stage,” he said to cheers. “Amazing.”
He added that King had made the town feel special and important.
“Life on the plantation could have crippled his life and destiny, but he never harboured bitterness.”

The eulogies were interspersed with music, including a powerful version of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, a century old “spiritual”.

President Barack Obama sent a letter which was read at the service.
"The blues has lost its king and America has lost a legend," said Mr Obama. "No one worked harder than BB. No one did more to spread the gospel of the blues. He gets stuck in your head, he gets you moving, he gets you doing the things you probably shouldn't do - but will always be glad you did.
"BB may be gone but that thrill will be with us forever. And there's going to be one killer blues session in heaven tonight."
The funeral service ended with a musical tribute. It was due to be followed by a procession to the BB King Museum where a private burial was to be held.

Kirby: The outdoor gospel plan

Kirby: The outdoor gospel plan

The Boy Scouts of America recently announced the appearance of a new Scouting award. Beginning this summer, the BSA will offer a merit badge in Human Sexuality.
The badge, which will be required for advancement to Eagle Scout, consists of 40 hours studying the various forms of human sexual behavior.
In a quote I made up entirely, a top BSA official said, "We hope this merit badge will promote greater understanding of all forms of sexual expression, although it's beyond me why any teenage boy would actually need help with this."
If I had to guess — and since I made all of this up, I do — the BSA probably hopes the new merit badge will open the door to inclusion of gay men as Scouting leaders. Currently, gay men are prohibited from all forms of camping within 5,000 yards of a Scout troop.
The LDS Church, which opposes any form of sexual practice not solely limited to heterosexual reproduction (including lurid dreams, impure thoughts, etc.), is considering its options should the BSA allow gay Scout leaders.
With an estimated half a million Mormon Boy Scouts, it's a big concern. What would Mormon male adolescence be without Scouting?
One of those options is for the LDS Church to discontinue its association with the BSA. Although I was a Boy Scout, and rocketed to the rank of Second Class in just three years, cutting ties to the BSA is OK with me.
I say this because the LDS Church doesn't need Scouting as much as Scouting needs the LDS Church. The Utah-based faith contributes $8.3 gazillion annually to the BSA, most of which goes to executive salaries. I'm still checking on this, but it sounds about right.
Mormons were involved in organized Scouting long before Sir Robert Baden-Powell (a guy with some serious sexual confusion of his own) invented it in 1907.
That was 60 years before Baden-Powell. The biggest difference being that what he called Scouting we referred to as "emigrating," or according to my Mormon ancestors, "Where the #%$@ are we going now?"
Mormon pioneers practically invented hauling stuff into the great outdoors and trying to make a go of it. We crossed the plains, fought wild animals, upset the local inhabitants, started enormous fires and practiced roundly condemned anti-social behavior long before it became a popular youth program.
It wouldn't take much for the church to start its own camping and knot-tying plan for young men and women. For the sake of whatever, let's call the church's new outdoor part of the gospel plan "Pioneering."
First, we would need structure and awards. How hard could that be?
For example, the Mormon version of the Eagle award might be the "Seagull" award, as in, "The former Seagull Pioneer and business leader was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for ... "
Other ranks could be Telestial, Terrestrial, Celestial and even Supreme Being. One thing Mormons are good at is qualifying progress by rank.
Mormon Pioneering merit badges might consist of things like "Automatic Obedience," "Church Activity," "Moral Compassing," "Wilderness Testifying," "Holy Ghost Husbandry" and "Bathroom Stall Modesty."
The program would help prepare young men and women for missions by teaching them how to relieve themselves in the weeds, eat nearly inedible food, and sleep well among vermin.
Best of all, it wouldn't cost very much to do this. Mormons operate almost entirely with unpaid volunteers. Top Pioneering executives wouldn't get paid millions either, because the church could just call them on a mission.

Methodists come clean about historic abuse

Methodists come clean about historic abuse

THE Methodist Church offered survivors of abuse a "full and unreserved apology" on Thursday, after an independent review, spanning 64 years, identified nearly 2000 cases of abuse. Six police investigations have been instigated as a result of the review.
The independent past-cases review, Courage, Cost and Hope, considered all safeguarding cases for which there were written records, and those recalled from memory by ministers and members dating back to 1950. These included cases involving children and adults that occurred within a church context, as well as those that were reported to the Church as pastoral problems. The review did not cover church schools or religious orders.
The definition of abuse used in the review was:
    a) sexual or physical abuse against a child or adult;
    b) emotional abuse/neglect if at the level of significant harm - against a child or adult;
    c) domestic abuse of any kind (child v. parent; wider family; woman v. man as well as the more usual male v. female violence);
    d) any other abuse of a vulnerable adult: financial institutional;
    e) accessing abusive images on screen.
In total, the review received 2566 responses reporting a safeguarding concern, including sexual, physical, emotional, and domestic abuse. These cases related to 1885 individuals cited as perpetrators or alleged perpetrators. Ministers or lay employees were involved in a quarter of the cases.
The report says that contributing to the review was "a difficult and painful task" not only for survivors, "but also for those in pastoral roles who made decisions in the past that they now regret".
The assessors who received the responses concluded that 48 per cent of the cases had been "satisfactorily dealt with". More than half (54 per cent) of the cases were closed because there was no longer an identifiable risk - often because the perpetrator or alleged perpetrator had died or become very elderly and infirm.
In eight cases there was an "immediate and significant concern" requiring an urgent response.
A total of 503 cases have been allocated to a current safeguarding worker. Of those, 61 have had contact with the police, and there are six ongoing police investigations.
In total, 200 ministers were identified as perpetrators or alleged perpetrators. The statistics suggest that the numbers have been consistent over the past 12 years and show no sign of decline. A total of 142 of the 200 cases cited direct abuse of the minister's position of authority. The concerns or abuse were of a sexual nature in relation to 102 cases.
The perpetrators were 82-per-cent male, nine per cent female. (Others were not specified or cases were both sexes were involved.) Victims were 19-per-cent male, 46 per cent female. Six per cent of caes involved both sexes; 29 per cent were unknown.
The Methodist General Secretary, the Revd Dr Martyn Atkins, gave an "unreserved apology for the failure of its current and earlier processes fully to protect children, young people, and adults from physical and sexual abuse inflicted by some ministers".
The abuse would remain  "a deep source of grief and shame to the Church", he said. "We have not always listened properly to those abused or cared for them, and this is deeply regrettable.
"In respect of these things we have, as a Christian Church, clearly failed to live in ways that glorify God and honour Christ."
The report is the product of three years of work led by a former deputy chief executive of Barnardo's, Jane Stacey, who has called for a  "significant culture change" in the Church.
The two "most worrying" themes she identified, she says in the report, were the weakness of accountability structures and a lack of support for ministers. Among the recommendations is "structured supervision for ministers".
The culture of the Church is made unsafe, the report says, "not only by the actions of the perpetrators, but also by the subsequent actions of those in authority or in colleague relationships, who have failed to respond in a way that recognises the reality of the abuse that has taken place. . . Many within the Church have difficulty reconciling the theology of forgiveness and redemption with safeguarding."
The cases highlighted include reference to a senior minister who was "highly resistant to cooperating with the statutory agencies" after a youth officer and local preacher was charged with the molestation of two boys.
The cost of the review was £262,000.
The Church of England conducted its own past cases review in 2008-2009. The conclusion of its analysis of 40,747 files covering 30 years was that 13 cases required formal action ( 26 February 2010). A news release was issued, but nothing to compare to the 100-page report released by the Methodist Church.
Since the C of E review, reports critical of the Church's safeguarding practice have been published, including the results of an archiepiscopal visitation to Chichester (News, 7 September, 2012) and the the Cahill Inquiry, which found "systemic failure" in the handling of allegations of abuse by a former Dean of Manchester ( News, 24 October, 2014).
On Thursday, Anne Lawrence of the Stop Church Child Abuse coalition said that the Methodist report had "shown up the complete lack of transparency in the C of E past-cases review", and that the Chichester inquiry showed that it "wasn't worth the paper it was written on".
She said: "Without transparency in reporting what  happened, such as that now demonstrated by the Methodist Church, the cultural changes required to make our churches safe places will never be possible.
"It is only when we can see and understand the harm caused and the cost of abuse in terms of the impact on survivors, their families, communities and the Churches, that we will begin to change how we respond and how we protect all members from abuse."
On Thursday, the Church of England's lead bishop on safeguarding, the Bishop of Durham, the Rt Revd Paul Butler, welcomed the new report.
"We will want to see if there are further lessons for us to learn from the Methodist Church review," he said. "We recognise that we still have a long way to go but remain committed to ensuring that the Church is safe for all in the future."
Ms Stacey praised the Methodist Church's review as a "courageous act", but she warned "There are undoubtedly cases that have not been reported," and encouraged survivors to come forward.
The Methodist Church encourages survivors and victims and those with any information to contact the Safeguarding Team: safeguarding@methodistchurch.org.uk
They will be listened to and support will be offered.

Methodist Church in Britain apologises for historical abuse

Methodist Church in Britain apologises for historical abuse

Institution makes public apology after independent investigation unearths nearly 2,000 reported cases of abuse dating to 1950

The Methodist Church in Britain has issued an “unreserved apology” for failing to protect children and adults after an independent investigation identified 1,885 reports of physical and sexual abuse within the institution dating back to the 1950s.
In a 100-page report published by the church on Thursday, ministers or lay employees are said to have been involved in a quarter of the cases, which included sexual, physical, emotional and domestic abuse as well as neglect.
In the 200 cases concerning ministers, 102 were of a sexual nature. There were six ongoing police investigations.
The report, called Courage, Cost and Hope, follows a three-year independent review commissioned by the church to “learn lessons of the past” and to make the church “safe for all”. The report’s author, Jane Stacey, called for major and far-reaching changes “both in practice and culture”.
Children’s charity NSPCC described it as a horrifying catalogue of abuse.
Rev Dr Martyn Atkins, general secretary of the Methodist Conference, said it was “deeply regrettable” that the church had “not always listened properly to those abused”.
“On behalf of the Methodist Church in Britain I want to express an unreserved apology for the failure of its current and earlier processes fully to protect children, young people and adults from physical and sexual abuse inflicted by some ministers,” Atkins said in a statement.
“The abuse that has been inflicted by some Methodists on children, young people and adults is and will remain a deep source of grief and shame to the church.”

The review looked at safeguarding cases for which there were written records, and also cases recalled from memory by ministers and church members going back to 1950. Cases examined include those that occurred within a church context and those reported to the church but which occurred away from it. Alleged perpetrators ranged from ministers to church attendees.
It examined each case to review whether the church’s response had been safe, pastorally appropriate and compliant with legislation, and whether it had been referred to police, if that was deemed appropriate, or if other remedial action had been taken.
Stacey, former deputy chief executive of children’s charity Barnardo’s, said religious ministers were in an “almost unique position of trust” often at vulnerable times in people’s lives. She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme there needed to be more robust accountability structures.
One case concerned the grooming of teenage girls on Facebook; another involved a youth officer who had indecent images of children on his computer.
Among victims who came forward was a man in his 30s, allegedly abused in the early 1990s by a church youth worker, who is now a lay pastor and youth worker in four churches. The alleged perpetrator has been suspended while a police investigation takes place.
The review found four alleged victims of a minister jailed for sexually assaulting children. Two of the alleged victims had made complaints which are being investigated by police. The minister was allowed to retire on compassionate grounds, which caused great offence to victims and their families, the report said.
Of the 1,885 cases, 187 alleged perpetrators were still alive and known to safeguarding teams. More than half (1,011) of the cases were closed as there was no longer an identifiable risk, while 687 cases (36%) were open to further action. Around half (914) of all cases were of a sexual nature. In 241 responses the respondent felt that matters were not left safely and that there may still be a risk to children or vulnerable adults.
Children aged under 18 made up 34% of victims. Those over 18 made up 31%, and the ages of the rest were unknown. Almost half (46%) of victims in the cases were female, and 19% male but in 29% the gender of the vicim was unknown.
One victim told the review team: “I have learned that it is impossible to recover from sexual abuse when no one recognises the seriousness of it. My church did not want a scandal, my parents did not want a scandal. I was left to feel worthless and devalued, while the man was left to get on with his life and, for all I know, repeat the crime with someone else. “
Others welcomed the report and opportunity to tell their story. “A candle is lit and it is no longer completely dark,” said one. “I want to prevent the church and other people from handling things wrong in the future. I don’t want other girls to suffer like I have”.
The NSPCC said: “This is a horrifying catalogue of abuse that the Methodist Church has revealed by confronting the dark side of its history. Having the courage to come clean about the extent of abuse, [the church] must now have measures in place to ensure there are no more such incidents and all children they have dealings with are given the protection and support they deserve.”
Law firm Leigh Day, representing a group of individuals taking action against the Methodist Church who allege they were abused by a church missionary in Africa in the 1980s, welcomed the investigation. “It has taken my clients over 30 years to have the courage to come forward with their allegations of abuse against the Methodist Church,” said Nichola Marshall, the firm’s head of international abuse.
“They welcome this public acknowledgment by the Methodist Church as they have faced criticism and disapproval from members of the community for speaking out in the past”.

SERAP asks Buhari to probe investment in power

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has decried poor electricity in the country and asked the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to probe the estimated investment of $30bn in the electricity sector for the past 15 years.
SERAP, in a statement by its Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, on Tuesday, berated President Goodluck Jonathan for not implementing the recommendation of the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty, human rights and adequate housing sent to the government in November 2013.
SERAP said, “The investment of over $30 billion in the electricity sector in the past 15 years has brought nothing but darkness to millions of Nigerians. The President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, should, as a matter of priority, probe where the $30 billion has gone and work with the UN mechanisms to ensure the full and effective implementation of their recommendations.
“Till date, the government has not responded to the eight crucial questions raised by the UN on the unfair and discriminatory electricity tariff and the pervasive level of corruption in the electricity sector. The unfortunate result is that Nigerians are made to pay for ‘electricity’ they don’t enjoy.”
The human rights group said a letter of concern the UN officials sent to President Goodluck Jonathan in which it expressed concerns that “access to electricity is a significant problem in Nigeria, and raised eight questions for the government to answer within 60 days was not acknowledged.”
The statement read, “The UN rapporteurs also said that, ‘Less than 50 per cent of registered electricity customers have access to electricity meters, and ongoing inaccuracies in measuring electricity usage will continue to hinder fair electricity access and exchange.’”
“They wanted answers to the alleged ‘mismanagement in the privatisation process, and over $3bn that has been mismanaged annually over the last ten years that has not been properly accounted for. The business units which have taken over from the PHCN participate in large-scale corruption such as graft from exorbitant consumer bills, rejection of payment to independent third parties such as banks to keep management of funds secret, unprecedented disconnection of consumers’ power lines, general bribery and fraud amongst staff, adding up to over N1bn extra charged to consumers annually.”
